The purpose of Nodebox is to make generative design much easier. Everything can be done through a series of nodes, which you can customize and connect however you want. It is designed for quick and comfortable data visualization. Also, the application places various input and output methods at your disposal and it also allows you to define your own data importers and exporters.

Without some basic knowledge about programming or generative design, the application will make no sense to you. The good news is that Nodebox is very well documented. You can find instructions, video tutorials and many other materials on the developer's website, so even if you are a novice, you will find something to help you get started.

The user interface consists of three panels, on which you can insert and connect nodes, change their parameters and visualize your work. Regardless of what settings you make, the results will be made visible instantly, in the preview area, where you can make other manipulations, by clicking and dragging. It is also possible to switch from the visual viewer to a data viewer, for raw information.

The created visuals can be static, animated or even interactive and they can be exported as PDF documents or as QuickTime movies. When it comes to importing the resources you need, you can load Photoshop and Illustrator projects or specific elements, like vectors or paths.

Pros

The application gives you complete freedom. You can customize any aspect of your generative designs. Nodebox comes with numerous documentation materials.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. Whether you are an expert or you just want to learn about generative designs, Nodebox is definitely something you would want to try.
